According to the policy adopted by ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the contact info a domain is registered with must be valid and up to date at all times. In addition, this info is freely visible on WHOIS lookup sites and while this may not be a problem for corporations, it may not be very acceptable for individuals, because anybody can view their names and their personal home and email addresses, particularly in an age when identity fraud is not that rare. For this reason, domain name registrars have launched a service that hides the details of their clients without modifying them. The service is referred to as Whois Privacy Protection. In case it is active, people will view the details of the domain registrar, not the domain owner’s, if they do a WHOIS lookup. The Whois Privacy Protection service is supported by all generic top-level domain name extensions, but it is still not possible to hide your details with some country-code extensions.
