The .SE country-specific top-level domain name extension was launched in 1986 and given to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration process was very restrictive, so a very low number of domain names were reserved. Persons were allowed to acquire solely one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was a requirement, i.e. merely Swedish individuals, businesses and organizations were able to obtain a .SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized notably and, accordingly, the number of dot SE domains has been rising each year.

Currently, anybody can get a .SE name, which allows you to reach the Swedish WWW community even if you do not have a local presence.
